Villanova Uses Seventh Inning Rally to Edge Blue Hens, 6-5

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Villanova scored three times during a pivotal seventh inning rally as the Wildcats defeated Delaware, 6-5, Saturday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark.
The Wildcats struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, before Delaware got on the board in the third as a sacrifice fly by Joey Loynd drove home Austin Colmery.
The Blue Hens loaded the bases in the sixth on singles by Kyle Baker, Jack Goan and Joseph Carpenter, while Aidan Riley followed with a two-run single to center to knot the game at 3-3.
However Villanova answered with three runs in the seventh to take the lead for good. Jack O'Reilly delivered an RBI single to put the Wildcats in front, before Pat O'Neill and Nick Oar each worked bases loaded walks.
Delaware got a pair of runs back in the eighth when Carpenter singled home Loynd and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Vinny Vaccone, but the Blue Hens went down in order in the ninth.
Loynd, Carpenter and Riley each finished with two hits on the day for UD, while starting pitcher Chris Ludman took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out seven in 6.1 innings on the mound.
