Men's Lacrosse Extends Win Streak in Overtime Thriller

NEWARK, Del. – Despite trailing by three in the closing six minutes of action, the No. 18 University of Delaware men's lacrosse team came back and bested CAA rival Towson, 13-12, in overtime on Saturday at Delaware Stadium.
Tye Kurtz delivered the overtime heroics for the Blue Hens (6-1, 3-0 CAA) to extend Delaware's win streak to six games. It marks the best regular season win streak for Delaware since the 2006 campaign when the program started the year a flawless 7-0.
Charlie Kitchen paced the Blue Hens offensively with a team-high four points opposite the Tigers (2-5, 0-2 CAA) after recording a hat trick to pair with an assist. His performance moved him into fifth in program history in career points (207) and he is now tied with Hayler Osborn '64 for fourth in career goals (128).   Â
The Blue Hens also received contributions on the offensive end from Mike Robinson and Cam Acchione, who poured in three goals apiece, while Mark Bieda, Drew Lenkaitis and Kurtz combined for four.
Defensively, Owen Grant made his presence known, causing a team-best three turnovers. He moved into fifth in program history with 45 for his career. Kitchen also chipped in with a pair of caused turnovers, tying his career-best mark. Â
The Blue Hens were first to get on the board and led by one, 3-2, with 6:35 on the clock in the opening quarter. However, Towson ripped off five unanswered goals from five different scorers with James Avanzato facilitating the offense with a trio of assists.
Delaware looked to halt the Tigers' momentum and came out in the second quarter with back-to-back scores by Kitchen and Lenkaitis to make it a two-goal game, 7-5. Towson answered right back with two goals of its own and went into the half up by four.
The Tigers tacked on one more score with 14:09 on the clock in the third quarter before being held scoreless for over a 15-minute stretch. With the Delaware defense clamping down, the Blue Hens went on a 4-0 run to pull within one, 10-9.
Despite a pair of scores by Towson early in the fourth quarter, Delaware did not back down and scored three goals in the final 5:19 to force overtime. Cam Acchione netted two of the goals, while Kitchen punctuated the 3-0 run with the game-tying score with just over a minute left in regulation.
Jake Hervada won the opening faceoff in overtime and the Blue Hens capitalized on the opportunity once Kurtz wrapped around the back of the net and bounced a shot past the Towson goalkeeper to secure the come-from-behind win.
Delaware will return to action on April 2 for a 12 p.m. CAA tilt against Fairfield at Delaware Stadium.
