Kate Henesey, Gabby Johnson score in season opener
FAIRFAX, Va. – Delaware women's soccer opened the 2021 spring season with a 2-0 win at George Mason inside George Mason Stadium Thursday night.
Juniors Kate Henesey and Gabby Johnson found the net for the Blue Hens (1-0), while junior Lauren Krinsky earned a shutout in her first career start in goal.
The Patriots suffered their third consecutive 2-0 loss to fall to 0-3 on the season.
Sophomore forward Claudia Benz had the best scoring chance of the scoreless first half, running in on goal in the 39th minute and ripping a shot that forced a kick save from Mason's Louisa Moser.
Delaware broke the deadlock just over four minutes into the second half. Senior midfielder Elizabeth Weimer drove into the attacking third from the left wing, playing a ball into the box for Henesey, who turned and placed a left-footed shot into the net. The goal was Henesey's first in a Delaware uniform.
In the 64th minute, Benz crossed a ball into the box for freshman Raychel Speicher who fired a low shot that was saved by a charging Moser. The rebound fell to Johnson, who slotted her fifth career goal into the empty net and doubled the Delaware lead.
Moments later, Krinsky came up big with a diving save at her right post to preserve the clean sheet. The East Brunswick, N.J., native made five saves on the night.
In addition to Speicher, freshmen Laura Fluegge, Anna Sisson, Lea Panagiotidis, and Kristin Wolf made their collegiate debuts in the win.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MIKE BARROQUEIRO
"I couldn't be more proud of these kids. With starts and stops, quarantines, and almost 500 days between competitive games, these kids have had so much thrown at them over the past calendar year. To come on the road against a very good George Mason team and get a result like that is just a testament to their character. We had so many good individual performances, but what was most impressive was the way those performances showed in a team context."
"Next for our young group is stringing together positive performances, so I'm excited to start preparing for Tuesday."
