NEWARK, Del. – The No. 12 Delaware men's lacrosse team fell to Drexel, 12-9, in a CAA contest on Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens (7-2, 4-1 CAA) found themselves in an early deficit that they were ultimately unable to climb out of against the Dragons (5-2, 3-2 CAA).
Charlie Kitchen and Matt Acchione paced the Blue Hens offensively with three goals apiece. Kitchen tacked on two assists to finish the day with a team-best five points, while adding four ground balls to his stat line. Acchione handed out one helper to cap his afternoon with four points.
Mike Robinson, Cam Acchione and Reed Kurtz additionally scored once each opposite the Dragons with Tye Kurtz chipping in with a pair of assists to jump to 25th in all-time points at Delaware.
Jake Hervada provided a lift for Delaware on the faceoff and won 8-of-12 to move into seventh all-time in program history in career faceoffs won. The senior tallied a team-best six ground balls as well.
Drexel jumped out to a 3-0 advantage with three different goal scorers finding the back of the net in the first six minutes of action. Delaware was kept off the board until Kitchen found Matt Acchione for the Blue Hens' first goal of the game at the 3:55 mark. The Blue Hens would go on the tally two more scores in the closing minutes of the opening frame to even the score at 3-3.
After trading a goal in the early stages of the second quarter, Drexel got hot offensively and went into the half leading 8-4 following four unanswered goals.
Delaware came out for the second half and got an early goal after Tye Kurtz found his brother, Reed, for the score to trim the deficit to three, 8-5. Drexel responded with a 3-0 run that lasted until the 3:54 mark when Matt Acchione capitalized on a man-up opportunity for Delaware.
The Blue Hens and Dragons went into the final quarter of play with Drexel up by five, 12-7. Quality shots were hard to come by for either side in the closing 15 minutes and despite the Blue Hens tallying a pair of scores, the Drexel lead proved to be insurmountable and the Dragons came away with the 12-9 road victory.
Delaware will begin a two-game road trip that starts with a CAA matchup against Hofstra on April 17 in Hempstead, N.Y., slated for 4 p.m.
