Blue Hens Softball Splits Twinbill at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Delaware cruised to an 11-0 victory in the opener before Hofstra responded with a 9-5 win during the nightcap as the Blue Hen softball team split a doubleheader with the Pride Saturday afternoon.
Brittney Mendoza gave Delaware the early lead in the opener by singling home Lexi Moore in the top of the first inning, while Hanna Garber belted a two-run homer and Brooke Glanden added a solo shot in the third to increase the Blue Hens' lead to four.
Delaware then put the game away by scoring seven times on just three hits in the top of the fifth. Karolina Flores started the rally with an RBI single, while Sarah Bessel drove home a run with a bases loaded walk and Moore capped the rally with a run-scoring infield single.
Moore, Mendoza, Glanden and Bessel each finished with two hits during the win, with Garber and Flores driving home two runs apiece. Emily Winburn fired a five-inning shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out three while improving to 10-0 on the year.
The Blue Hens jumped in front during the second game as well, as Garber delivered a two-run double and Moore followed with a two-run single to give UD a 4-0 cushion in the top of the second.
However Hofstra finally got on the board in the bottom half by scoring six runs, including a three-run homer by Jaycee Ruberti.
Halle Kisamore doubled home Mendoza to bring the Blue Hens within 6-5 in the top of the fifth, but the Pride answered with three runs in the bottom half on RBI doubles by Sam Ward and Ruberti to put the game away.
Glanden and Kisamore paced the UD attack with two hits each, while Garber and Moore both drove in a pair of runs.
