PHILADELPHIA – The Delaware softball team dropped the opener, 9-0, before responding with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap as the Blue Hens split a CAA doubleheader with Drexel on Friday afternoon.
Delaware remains in first place in the conference's North Division with a 9-4 record, while Drexel is still one game back with a 7-4 mark. The Blue Hens have also clinched a berth in the five-team CAA Tournament on May 12-15 at James Madison.
After easily taking the opener, the Dragons jumped ahead in the nightcap by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. However Blue Hen pitcher Delani Sheehan would fire six consecutive scoreless frames from there to pave the way for the UD comeback.
Karolina Flores led off the top of the second with a double, and two outs later she scored on a double by Emily Blum to put the Blue Hens on the board.
Flores then belted a home run in the fourth, while Halle Kisamore followed with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give Delaware the lead.
Flores led off the sixth with another solo shot to tack on an insurance run. She finished 3 for 3 with a double and two homers to pace the UD attack.
Sheehan improved to 4-2 after allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out three in a complete game effort.
Drexel hit three homers, including three-run shots by Hannah Walker and Kristi DiMeo, to win the first game, while Brooklyn Daly fired a one-hitter for the Dragons.
