Winburn Fires Shutout as Delaware Defeats Hofstra, 1-0, in CAA Tournament

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Blue Hen sophomore Emily Winburn fired a two-hit shutout as the Delaware softball team edged Hofstra, 1-0, in the first game of the CAA Tournament Wednesday morning at JMU's Veterans Memorial Park.
The fourth-seeded Blue Hens advance to face the top-seeded and No. 22 ranked Dukes at 5 p.m. this afternoon.
Winburn, a second team All-CAA selection, allowed just two singles while improving to 13-2 and posting her fourth shutout of the year.
Delaware scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brittney Mendoza singled with one out, beat the throw to second on a groundball hit by shortstop by Brooke Glanden, and came around to score when the throw to first from Hofstra second baseman Brianna Morse went out of play.
The Pride put two runners on base with one out in the seventh on a hit batter and a Blue Hen error, but Winburn retired Madison McKevitt on a fielder's choice before striking out Alexis Goeke to seal the win.
