HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Delaware softball team's dramatic CAA Championship run ended with a 17-0 loss to top-seeded and No. 22-ranked James Madison on Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Dukes, who won their fifth CAA title since 2014, took control early by scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kate Gordon hit a leadoff homer for the third consecutive game while Logan Newton, Hallie Hall, Hannah Shifflett and Sarah Jubas added RBI singles. Newton then capped the rally with a grand slam.
After Kailey Christian retired JMU in order during the second, the Dukes tacked on four runs in the third including a two-run shot by Gordon. Newton added a two-run double in the fourth to close the scoring.
Delaware, making its first appearance in the CAA final since 2004, had its best chance to score in the top of the third when Chayanna Gallardo singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Julz Garber. However JMU pitcher Odicci Alexander retired the next two Blue Hen batters to escape the jam.
Brittney Mendoza, Karolina Flores and Julz Garber represented the Blue Hens on the All-Tournament Team.
Delaware will now hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament; the selection show will air Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2.
