HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Delaware men's lacrosse team's 2021 season came to an end after falling to Hofstra, 10-9, in the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament on Thursday.
The Blue Hens (10-3) were paced offensively by Charlie Kitchen, who closed out his collegiate career with one final hat trick after scoring three goals on five shots to pair with two assists against the Pride (8-5). The two helpers gave the Marlton, N.J., native sole possession of fourth in CAA history in career assists with 93.
Alongside Kitchen, Cam Acchione chipped in with a pair of scores, while Jason Seiter, Tye Kurtz, Mike Robinson and Matt Acchione each tallied a goal. The goal by Kurtz pushed him into a tie for 20th in program history in career points with 127.
Jake Hervada helped the Blue Hens win the face off battle as the graduate student finished with 12 wins. He became just the sixth player in program history to win 400 career face offs.
The Blue Hens wasted no time getting on the board and after winning the opening faceoff, Joe Speers picked up the ball and set up Seiter for his first collegiate goal just 14 seconds into action. Less than four minutes later, Delaware extended its early advantage to two once Kitchen spun past a defender in front of the goal and buried a shot.
It remained a two-goal contest until Hofstra scored twice in the final minute to even the score and then put in four unanswered to start the second quarter to go ahead, 6-2. The Blue Hens trimmed the deficit to three just before the first half ended after Matt Acchione bounced a shot into the back of the net.
Delaware came out of the locker room for the second half and immediately went to work. After the Blue Hens' defense forced a shot clock violation, Kitchen found Robinson to spark a 5-1 run that spanned the length of the third quarter. Kitchen evened the score at 7-7 with a goal at 6:17 before Mark Bieda dished the ball to a cutting Cam Acchione to put Delaware up by one.
Hofstra quickly erased the two-goal deficit with three goals in the first six minutes of the final quarter to take a 10-8 lead. Despite a Delaware goal with 8:45 remaining in the game, the Hofstra run ended up proving to be the difference maker as the Pride claimed the victory to advance to the championship game. Â
