NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware baseball team fell in a pair of CAA games to Towson at Bob Hannah Stadium on Saturday.
The Blue Hens (9-20, 5-14 CAA) dropped the first game, 12-4, before falling, 12-7, in game two to the Tigers (18-29, 8-7 CAA).
Jake Dunion paced Delaware at the plate, going a combined 5-for-9 with a home run, four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Joey Loynd also contributed at the dish, batting 4-for-8 with a run scored and two RBIs.
GAME ONE
Six Blue Hens combined for seven hits in the Saturday opener against the Tigers. Dunion had the most success at the plate, tallying a pair of base hits and driving in two of Delaware's four runs. Aidan Kane and Joseph Carpenter each drove in one, with Carpenter's RBI coming in the fifth off a solo home run.
Towson jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage after plating a run in each of the first two innings. The lead did not hold for long as Delaware came up in the bottom of the second and went ahead with a three-run frame. Jack Goan and Loynd walked in back-to-back at-bats before Kane drove in Goan on a single to center. Three batters later, Dunion drove in two on a single to right center to put the Blue Hens on top, 3-2.
The Tigers evened the score in the fourth before retaking the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Delaware made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth after Carpenter's solo blast.
Towson took control the rest of the way and plated seven additional runs before securing the 12-4 victory.
GAME TWO
Both teams were kept off the board in the opening two frames, but Delaware plated a pair of runs in the third to take the early advantage. Dunion led off the inning with a single to center and after being moved over to second, he came in to score on a Kyle Baker base knock. Three batters later, Baker crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Goan.
After a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Hens held a 3-0 advantage up until the sixth inning. In the sixth, the Towson hitters got into a groove and evened the score up after plating three runs.
Towson took the lead in the seventh with a run before tacking on three more in the eighth to grab a 7-3 edge.
In the bottom of the eighth, Mitchell Balint led things off with a single and scored once Dunion blasted a two-run shot over the fence in right. The Blue Hens later loaded the bases and tied the game on a Loynd two-RBI double to left.
The Tigers immediately came back in the top of the ninth and countered with five runs before eventually capturing the 12-7 road victory.
