Delaware Drops Road Tilt to Villanova
8/28/2021 7:33:00 PM | Volleyball
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Delaware volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to Villanova, 3-0, on Saturday night.
"We definitely had a tough night and Villanova played really well," head coach Sara Matthews said. "They executed at a high level and we didn't make enough adjustments to take them out of their game plan. The positive from tonight is that we have a number of things we can continue to get better at. We will bounce back and be better down the road because of what transpired on the court tonight."Â
Savannah Seemans led the Blue Hens' (2-1) offense with eight kills against the Wildcats (2-1). Lani Mason and Lauryn Richardson chipped in with seven and six, respectively. Working as the primary setter, Ezgi Basaranlar tallied 21 assists.
Defensively, Katie Turner came away with nine digs to lead all Blue Hens, while Kirah Johnson posted a game-high four blocks. Â
SET ONE
The two sides went back and forth during the early part of the opening set, but Villanova began to get into a rhythm. Leading by two, 9-7, the Wildcats went on a 16-6 run to secure the set win. Â
SET TWO
A kill by Grace Underwood halted a 3-0 Villanova run and evened the score at 18-18. However, the Wildcats went on to outscore the Blue Hens, 7-2, the rest of the way to grab the set victory. Â
SET THREE
Villanova controlled the tempo in the third set and quickly went ahead by eight after opening things up with a 12-4 run. The Wildcats were able to counter any Delaware points and held onto their advantage en route to winning the final set, 25-13.
UP NEXT
The Blue Hens return home next weekend to host NJIT, Fordham and UMES for the Delaware Invitational. Delaware will open the weekend with a Friday tilt against NJIT slated for 12 p.m. before batting Fordham at 7 p.m.
