NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware track & field interim head coach Ryan Waite announced the addition of assistant coach Melanie Heslop to his staff ahead of the 2021-22 season. In her new role, Heslop will be responsible for the oversight of throwing events and will begin at Delaware on Sept. 17.
"I'm thrilled to add Melanie to our staff and the University of Delaware community," said Waite. "We have a great group of throwers on this team and adding Melanie will give them the opportunity to reach their full potential. She came highly recommended from colleagues that I have a tremendous amount of respect for, so I am confident she will be able to continue building our throws group and our team."
Heslop comes to Newark after spending a two-year stint (2019-21) as the volunteer assistant coach at the University of Wyoming. She worked alongside Carrie Lane, a highly regarded throws coach in the country, and helped her coach 14 All-Mountain West Conference selections, three first round NCAA West preliminary round qualifiers and one NCAA All-American in the Men's Discus event.
Heslop stated, "These ladies have a lot of potential and I am thrilled for the opportunity to join them. Coach Waite has a strong vision for the team and I look forward to working with him in helping continue this program towards success."
Prior to Wyoming, Heslop spent five seasons (2015-19) at Millikin University as a graduate assistant track & field coach. She was part of the 2019 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year, has coached five All-CCIW performers and assisted 15 athletes set program top-10 marks, including the men's weight throw school record. During her tenure, Helsop saw the program grow from 30 to 70 athletes over two seasons and also designed weight lifting programs, conditioning and practice schedules while maintaining all the throwing equipment.
Along with her coaching experience, Heslop also has an accomplished collegiate resume highlighted by her standout career competing in throwing events at Utah State University. Her accolades include having the No. 4 weight throw and No. 7 hammer throw marks in school history. Heslop was an NCAA First Round Qualifier and earned seven all-conference honors, four in the Mountain West and three in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and was named a team captain during her senior season.
A native of Kirtland, N.M., Heslop earned her bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from Utah State in 2015 and a master's degree in Business Administration from Milliken in 2019.
