Delaware Falls to James Madison in Conference Opener

NEWARK, Del. – Despite rallying back to claim the third and fourth sets, the Delaware volleyball team fell in five sets to JMU, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Three Blue Hens (5-5, 0-1 CAA) recorded double-digit kills against the Dukes (7-2, 1-0 CAA) in the CAA opener. Savannah Seemans led the way, hitting .324 with 15 kills to pair with nine digs. Lani Mason posted a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Kirah Johnson chipped in with 11 kills.
In her collegiate debut, Mackenzie Sobczyk showed out with seven kills while hitting .545. Ezgi Basaranlar flirted with a double-double after notching a match-best 43 assists to go along with nine digs. Katie Turner finished with the most digs for the Blue Hens with 18.
SET ONE
The Blue Hens led by one, 15-14, before the Dukes went on a 9-2 run to take the lead. Delaware scored back-to-back points on a Johnson kill and Turner ace, but James Madison closed out the set for the 25-19 win.
SET TWO
The Dukes jumped out to a 10-6 advantage but a Basaranlar kill sparked an 8-0 run to put the Blue Hens on top by four. However, James Madison got red hot and finished the set on a 15-2 run to grab the 25-16 win.
SET THREE
An 8-2 run put the Blue Hens on top, 15-9. The Dukes got as close as three, but Delaware built their lead back up before eventually capturing the 25-19 win.
SET FOUR
James Madison led 5-4 early before back-to-back kills by Lauryn Richardson started a 14-5 Delaware run. The Blue Hens warded off the Dukes' attack and secured the 25-15 set win.
SET FIVE
The Dukes held a 6-4 advantage but Delaware got into rhythm and outscored James Madison, 5-1, to go ahead by two. The Dukes countered with a 5-1 run of their own before closing out the set with a 15-13 win.

The Blue Hens will square off against James Madison tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
