NEWARK, Del. – Delaware suffered through a tough shooting night as the Blue Hens dropped their first home game of the season with a 69-62 defeat to Towson Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Andrew Carr led Delaware with 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field, while Ebby Asamoah contributed 12 points. Dylan Painter was the third Blue Hen in double figures with 11 points, while Kevin Anderson added nine points, six assists and four steals.
Delaware shot just 42.6 percent from the field, including 5 of 26 from three-point range. The Blue Hens, who were a perfect 7-0 at the BCC this season, had their nine-game home winning streak snapped.
Cam Holden paced the Tigers with 19 points, Nicolas Timberlake chipped in 18, and Charles Thompson had 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Blue Hens led for the first 16 minutes of the contest, and took their largest lead of the first half at 21-13 on two free throws by Jameer Nelson Jr. at the 8:27 mark. But Towson answered with a 14-2 run to go in front by four, and after an Asamoah three-pointer tied the game, Holden converted a layup in the final minute to give the Tigers a 31-29 edge at the break.
Delaware pulled even at 33-33 early in the second half, but the Tigers scored seven points in a row to go up 40-33 and force a Blue Hen timeout with 16:55 to play.
Towson extended the margin to 11 before Asamoah scored the game's next nine points, and after a Juwan Gray layup, Ryan Allen converted a pair of driving layups to tie the game at 48-48 with 11 and a half minutes left.
Anderson's layup put Delaware back up three at 55-52 at the 9:16 mark, but Towson scored the next seven points and led the rest of the way. Allen had a chance to tie in the final seconds following a UD steal, but his three-pointer was off the mark and the Tigers hit four free throws to seal the victory.
Martin Ingelsby
"This was a tough one for us. Towson is a very good, tough, physical basketball team. We did enough on the defensive end but settled for too many threes. We got away from going inside, and sometimes the ball just doesn't go in the basket. We've got to regroup and get ready to play these guys again Thursday."
