Newark, Del. – Cross country competed in its final meet of the regular season on Saturday, hosting the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park.
In a field of 61 runners featuring seven different schools, Jessica Pidgeon placed third overall and first among Blue Hens runners, finishing the 6K course with a time of 24:24.23.
"I felt really strong today, this was my last race on this course so I wanted to give it everything I had," Pidgeon said. "I'm really proud of how we all raced today. We've been training hard all season here, so it was cool to see our hard work pay off."
Delaware took spots 3-6 in the race with Stephanie Herrera, Lindsey Volkman and Anna Cleary each finishing in order behind Pidgeon. Herrera crossed the finish line in fourth with a time of 24:40.74, Volkman placed fifth with a time of 24:41.62 and Cleary earned sixth place with a time of 24:48.42.
"I think they did really well today," head coach Kenyetta Iyevbele said. "We've been talking about executing all season, and in terms of the team's ability to show what they've been doing in training, it definitely showed today."
Among seven competitive institutions, Delaware finished second in scoring with a mark of 29, just one point behind team title winner Towson, who scored 28. The Delaware club cross country team rounded out the top three with a score of 106. Towson graduate student Beighley Ayers earned the individual title with a time of 24:07.11.
It was senior day for Delaware with Anna Cleary, Katie Hally, Sarah Kimak, Alicia LeNoir, Jessica Pidgeon, Autumn Sands and Jessica Stratton each closing out their regular season this weekend. Iyevbele remarked on the impact they have made on the team.
"The seniors have meant everything to this team," Iyevbele said. "I think it's tremendous when you have a solid group of seniors to set the foundation and set the culture which allows new people to come in and follow that. I will definitely miss them, they have been a huge inspiration to all of us."
The Blue Hens have the week off to prepare for the CAA Championship on October 28, hosted at White Clay Creek State Park.
