CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Delaware field hockey (5-10) dropped a road non-conference game against No. 15 Harvard 2-1 on Sunday.
"Today we added more grit and teamwork to our performance against last year's Final Four team Harvard," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "The way we played defense together showed great character, which will be very beneficial as we prepare for a CAA showdown with Northeastern on Friday. We continued to play a lot of freshmen players who are all getting more experience that will help us come November. It is great to see that our returners are assisting them with their transition."
After Harvard took an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter, the Blue Hens responded with a goal from Grace Hoepfner off a penalty corner in the 12th minute. Ashlyn Carr inserted the corner to Julia Duffhuis, who passed the ball to Hoepfer, and deflected it past the Crimson goalkeeper. It's Hoepfner's first goal of the season. Carr picked up her fifth assist, which is tied for the team lead. Duffhuis picked up her first assist.
The Crimson scored the game-winning goal in the 51st minute of the fourth quarter off a penalty corner.
On the day, the Crimson out-shot the Blue Hens 19-3 and had a 10-2 shots-on-goal advantage. Lizzie Gaebel was credited with the decision. She had eight saves and allowed two goals.
The Blue Hens return to Rullo Stadium for a Colonial Athletic Association game against Northeastern (3-11, 2-1 CAA) on Friday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m.
