10/22/2022 3:39:00 PM | Volleyball
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Delaware volleyball team comes up short in their late rally attempt and fell in four sets (17-25, 21-25, 25-14, 23-25) to Hofstra (14-8, 11-0 CAA) in a much anticipated CAA battle Saturday afternoon inside David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
Delaware (11-8, 7-4 CAA) finished the afternoon hitting at a .101 clip compared to Hofstra's .167. The Blue Hens led the way in points (63-58), kills (46-42), aces (10-3), assists (43-41) and digs (56-55) while the Pride held the edge in blocks (13-7).
After dropping the first two sets, Delaware remembered who they were and put together the best hitting performance of the match. Attacking at a dominating rate of .462, the Blue Hens scored four-straight points kickstarted by a Savannah Seemans' kill to take the 9-5 advantage. Delaware followed with an 11-5 spurt that was capped by Lauryn Richardson dusting off Eileen Gex's feed, 20-11. Hofstra got in as close as seven, 20-13, before Richardson's kill ignited a 5-1 run for the Blue Hens to capture the 25-14 set three win.
After the Pride took a 5-2 lead in the fourth set, the Blue Hens got right back in the set with a 9-3 run highlighted by the brick wall of Seemans and Mackenzie Sobczyk sending away two Pride attempts. Hofstra answered back by knotting the set up on three separate occasions and then regained the lead, 20-18. Delaware remained poised and went on a much-needed 5-1 scoring run that was closed out by Lani Mason's kill for the 23-21 lead. The Pride responded at a critical time by scoring four unanswered points that proved to be the match-winning run to secure their 11th-straight win (25-23).
Mason paced Delaware with her 10th double-double of the season (13 kills, 10 digs). Seemans followed with 12 kills, nine digs, five aces and three block assists. Lily Rogers chipped in with 10 kills, 18 assists and five digs to post her sixth double-double of the season. Ezgi Basaranlar made her return to the court dishing out 21 assists while Gex anchored the Blue Hen defense with 18 digs. Sobczyk stood tall for Delaware with four block assists.
Zyare Abdul-Rahim (seven block assists) and Yagmur Cinel both finished with 16 kills apiece for Hofstra. Beatriz Alves dished out 38 assists while Chiara Cucco and Clara Ball scooped up 19 and 11 digs, respectively.
