"Congratulations to UNC as their performance highlights them being the favorite to win the 2022 National Championship," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "We had a number of good moments but not enough to fight ourselves back into the game. Although our season ended sooner than we hoped for, the future of Delaware field hockey looks great. We were able to develop stronger leadership throughout. This team, had many underclassmen playing quality minutes, and were able to build stronger connections within the season. I am confident with what we have returning and joining next year. The Blue Hens will be back in the position to compete for championships in the CAA and NCAA."
"As a program we would like to thank our entire player group for staying the course, trusting the process and never stop believing that we would play our best hockey when it mattered most; the post season. As a coaching staff we also want to share our sincere appreciation to our graduate students Lizzie Gaebel, Grace Hoepfner and Lisa Kater as well as seniors Ashlyn Carr and Morgan Rigual. Without their passion, energy and leadership this team would have not been able to earn a share of the CAA Regular Season, win the CAA Conference Tournament and advance into the NCAA Tournament. These five Blue Hens should be very proud of their contributions as players and people to themselves and our University of Delaware field hockey program."
The Blue Hens got off to a quick start, taking a 1-0 off a Julia Duffhuis penalty corner goal in the 18th second of the first quarter. She was assisted by Ashlyn Carr and Berber Bakermans. Carr inserted the pass to Bakermans, and passed it off to Duffhuis, who found the back of the net. It was Duffhuis' 14th goal of the season. Carr was credited with her team-leading 17th assist, and Bakermans picked up her 14th assist.
After the Blue Hens took the lead, the Tar Heels proceeded to score five goals before the end of the first half. The Blue Hens played tough defense in the second half, and Kiki Oudshoorn had multiple chances to score, however, both of her shots were blocked.
The Blue Hens had six shots on the day, including three shots on goal. Lizzie Gaebel was credited with the decision. She had a career-high 15 saves in the loss.
