Volleyball Completes Reverse Sweep Over #6 Charleston To Advance To CAA Semis
11/17/2022 11:40:00 PM | Volleyball
TOWSON, Md. – Nobody said the road to the 'ship was going to be easy! Down two sets early, the third-seeded University of Delaware volleyball team showed why they are called the Fightin' Blue Hens and completed the reverse sweep (17-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-13) over sixth-seeded Charleston (14-16) in the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship, presented by Primis, quarterfinal round inside SECU Arena in Towson, Md. The win marks the Blue Hens (16-10) advancing to their 12th semifinal, will face the seventh-seed William & Mary (12-13) Friday at 6:30 p.m. and it's head coach Kimberly Lambert's first postseason victory at the helm.
After dropping the opening two sets and their backs against the wall, Delaware leaned on their resiliency to see them through set three. After Charleston took the 8-6 lead, the Blue Hens scored six unanswered points headlined by Savannah Seemans serving five-straight, for the 12-8 lead. The seesaw battle commenced where the set saw eight ties and four lead changes. Delaware maintained control after Seemans nailed down Ezgi Basaranlar's pass for the Blue Hens to keep the lead for good. A Pearce Augier kill followed by Delaware capitalizing off of the Cougars' attacking error provided some daylight for the Blue Hens, 25-21.
The Blue Hens continued to apply pressure in set four and prevailed as they opened with a 7-1 spurt, capped by back-to-back Cougar attacking errors. Charleston clawed their way back into the match, trailing no more than three points throughout the set. The Cougars made it a 23-22 match before the Blue Hens scored two-straight which was closed out by a crucial Lily Rogers' kill that sent the match into the fifth set (25-22).
Delaware was getting ready to play in their ninth five-set thriller this season with all the momentum favoring the Blue & Gold. The Blue Hens opened with a 8-4 run that was capped beautifully by Seemans dusting off Eileen Gex's feed. Delaware earned the 11-7 lead before Charleston turned up the heat with a 6-1 spurt to take its final lead of the night, 13-12. Coach Lambert called her final timeout which proved to be a wise choice as the Blue Hens scored the final three points. The most important kill of the night was when Basaranlar connected with Rogers for the point that sent Delaware into tomorrow's semifinal-round, 15-13.
Lani Mason led the way with 23 kills and 17 digs to post her 15th double-double on the season. She also added three aces and two blocks to her stat line. Rogers followed with a career-best 15 kills while Seemans chipped in 10 kills and 17 digs to register her sixth double-double of the season. Basaranlar was charged with directing the Blue Hen offense, dishing out 48 assists to go with 13 digs, tallying her fourth double-double of the season. Gex anchored the Blue Hen defense with a career-best 28 digs while Johnson stood tall for Delaware and sent away six attempts.
Lexi Wierzbicki paced Charleston with 19 kills and seven digs while Gabi Bailey added 11 kills and 16 digs. Anna Smith had 10 kills and Jasmin Goei (16 digs) and Emma Appleman (11 digs) dished out 25 and 23 assists, respectively. Tynley Smeltzer scooped up 22 digs.
