TOWSON, Md. – WE'RE GOING TO THE 'SHIP!! The University of Delaware volleyball stared adversity in its face and prevailed once again by capturing the five set (25-18, 16-25, 25-22, 23-25, 16-14) thrilling victory over seventh-seeded William & Mary (12-14) in the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship, presented by Primis, semifinal round inside SECU Arena in Towson, Md. The win marks the Blue Hens (17-10) advancing to its first title match since 2016 and will face the top-seeded and three-time defending champions Towson (28-1) Saturday (Nov. 19) at 6 p.m. It is also head coach Kimberly Lambert's first semifinal victory at the helm.
Using the momentum from last night's win, Delaware opened the semifinals with a 6-3 run that was capped by a Pearce Augier kill. William & Mary responded by scoring seven-straight points to take the 10-6 lead. When the scoreboard read 17-16 in favor of the Tribe, the Blue Hens turned up the intensity and went on a dominating 9-1 run, highlighted by Savannah Seemans serving the last five points, for the 25-18 set one victory.
Despite the Blue Hens using a 6-1 run to claw their way back into the set (24-16), William & Mary took the 25-16 set two win to knot the match up at a one apiece.
Set three was a back-and-forth battle for the advantage where Delaware was able to pull away and build a six-point cushion, 22-16. William & Mary answered back with a 6-2 run to pull within two points, 24-22. Ezgi Basaranlar then set up Lani Mason beautifully for the Blue Hens to take the 2-1 lead (25-22).
The fourth set looked like the Blue & Gold was going to the promise land after Seemans' kill ignited a 5-0 run to extend the lead to four, 12-8. With their season on the line, the Tribe rallied back and regained the lead for good, thanks to a critical 5-1 spurt to close out and push the match to the decisive fifth set, 25-23.
The Blue Hens have shown this season that they thrive in the fifth set. The match was tied at five apiece before Basaranlar connected with Seemans to kickstart a impressive 9-3 run to have match point in the Blue Hens' hands, 14-8. The determination and grit of William & Mary came out when they answered quickly by scoring six-unanswered points to make it a 14-all match. Delaware remained poised as they have been all season and scored the matches final two points that had Basaranlar's hands all over it. Basaranlar dished out one to Mason for match point and then served up the match-winning ace for the Blue Hens to punch its ticket to the championship match.
Mason led the way with 24 kills, 18 digs and four blocks to post her 16th double-double on the season in Delaware's win. Kirah Johnson followed with 14 kills and six blocks. Seemans (17 digs, seventh double-double on the season) and Lily Rogers finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Basaranlar, as always charged with directing the Blue Hen offense, dished 49 assists, scooped up nine digs, sent away three attempts and served two aces. Eileen Gex anchored the Blue Hen defense with 20 digs and dished out seven assists.
Maddie Meyers paced William & Mary with 15 kills and 21 digs. Nicole Smith and Eleanor Stothoff added 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Emma Minnick (14 digs) and Am Schwem were responsible for William & Mary's offense and they finished with 26 and 20 assists, respectively. Olivia Esposito stood tall for the Tribe with 10 blocks while Anna Porter had 26 digs.
