Volleyball Set For CAA Title Match Against #1 Towson

TOWSON, Md. – WE ARE GOING TO THE 'SHIP! Third-seeded University of Delaware volleyball team stared adversity in its face and prevailed once again in the CAA Championship semifinal round Friday evening (Nov. 18) to advance to its first championship match since 2016. First-year head coach Kimberly Lambert and her flock of Blue Hens (17-10) is set for Saturday's (Nov. 19) championship duel against top-seeded and three-time defending champions Towson (28-1) as opening serve is slated for 6 p.m. inside SECU Arena.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
The Fightin' Blue Hens displayed their resiliency Friday evening and captured the five-set thrilling victory over seventh-seeded William & Mary (12-14) in the last semifinal match of the night. The Blue Hens were led by CAA Player of the Year Lani Mason's 24 kills, 18 digs and four blocks (16th double-double on the season), Kirah Johnson's career-best 14 kills and Savannah Seemans 12-kill and 17-dig performance (seventh double-double on the season). Lily Rogers also reached double figures with 12 kills. All-CAA second-team honoree Ezgi Basaranlar, as always charged with directing the Blue Hen offense, dished 49 assists, scooped up nine digs, sent away three attempts and served two aces while Eileen Gex anchored the Blue Hen defense with 20 digs and dished out seven assists.
Towson defeated fourth-seeded Northeastern in straight sets behind a stout defensive effort with 16 blocks to advance to its fourth straight CAA Championship final Thursday afternoon. Towson recorded 16 blocks, with four Tigers stuffing at least five attacks, limiting Northeastern to a .034 team hitting percentage. Aayinde Smith tallied a match-high nine blocks to lead the Tigers, while Lydia Wiers and Irbe Lazda recorded seven apiece. Victoria Barrett paced Towson with 15 kills, hitting .278 for the match, and added nine digs, one shy of her second double-double of the CAA Tournament.
OUR POSTSEASON HISTORY
On the quest to capture its fifth CAA Championship in program history, the Blue Hens will be looking to hoist its first title since 2011. The Blue & Gold won back-to-back titles in 2007-08 and again 2010-11. Overall, Delaware is 18-11 all-time in CAA tournament games and hold a 4-3 record in championship matches since joining the league in 2001.
SEASON/ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST TOWSON
Delaware and Towson will be meeting for the third time this fall, the second time in the title match, as the Tigers swept the two-match regular-season series in Newark, Del. Saturday's match will be the 94th all-time meeting, with Towson holding a 53-40 record over Delaware. The Blue Hens will be looking to snap the 10-match losing streak in the most important match of the season.
Delaware and Towson met in the 2004 CAA Championship match where the Tigers captured the straight sets victory to secure its first-ever championship on Nov. 21.
Currently, both teams are entering the showdown with active winning streaks; Towson with a 10-match winning streak and Delaware with a five-match winning streak.
THE QUEST TO THE CAA TROPHY AND THE NCAA AUTOMATIC BID IS ON!
The winner of the tournament will earn the automatic bid into the 2022 NCAA Volleyball Division I Tournament. The selection show will be at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 27 on ESPNU. First- and second- round games are Dec. 1-2 or 2-3.
