Volleyball Secures Season Series Sweep At William & Mary In Five-Set Thriller

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – It's deja vu all over again! The University of Delaware played their eighth five-set thriller, third straight this season, and prevailed once again (25-21, 21-25, 27-25, 20-25, 15-7) over William & Mary (11-11, 6-8 CAA) Sunday afternoon inside Kaplan Arena to close out CAA play. With the win, the Blue Hens (14-10, 10-6 CAA) secured the season series sweep while prolonging the Tribe's chance of clinching the upcoming CAA tournament and still sit in fourth place in league standings.
"I'm very proud of our willingness to fight today, especially when it was extremely difficult and our backs were against the wall," said head coach Kimberly Lambert. "I'm even more pleased with the way we finished the match. Every single person was locked in and contributed to how dominating we came out in the deciding set. It feels great to close out conference play strong."
Delaware's finest set came at the right time, swinging at a .375 clip in the deciding set, before closing out the afternoon attacking at a rate of .237 compared to William & Mary's .271. The Blue Hens led the way in aces (9-3) and blocks (12-9) while the Tribe held the advantage in points (88-83), kills (76-62), assists (72-56) and digs (83-78).
The Blue Hens used the momentum from yesterday's performance into today's match and opened with a 6-2 run capped by Hannah Wright's ace. The Tribe closed the gap and regained the lead after Sabrina Malcolm's kill, 21-19. Lani Mason and Kirah Johnson then teamed up to send away Eleanor Stothoff's attempt to kickstart a 6-0 scoring run that was closed out by Wright's ace for Delaware to take the 25-21 opening set win.
After William & Mary captured the 25-21 set two victory, the Blue Hens and the Tribe fought for set three to be in their win column. The fans of 420 saw the seesaw battle commence in Williamsburg as things swayed in favor of the home team, 24-22. Delaware remained poised and used a timely 5-2 run that was capped beautifully by the blocking duo of Johnson and Ezgi Basaranlar for the 27-25 win.
The Tribe bounced back and forced the match to go into the fifth set for the second-straight time after capturing the 25-20 set four win. Then the tide changed and was raining all Blue & Gold as the Blue Hens were unstoppable in the deciding set. Mason nailed down one to ignited the 8-1 spurt. William & Mary battled to trim the deficit to seven after Stothoff's kill, 14-7, before Mason dusted off Basaranlar's feed to record her 30th kill of the afternoon and secure the 15-7 win.
For the second-straight match and the fifth time this season (30+ kills), Mason finished with 30 kills to go along with 10 digs to post her 14th double-double of the season.Seemans (14 digs, three blocks), Johnson (seven blocks) and Lauryn Richardson followed with nine kills apiece. Basaranlar was tasked out to direct the Blue Hen offense with 50 assists and added nine digs and five blocks to her stat line. Eileen Gex and Amelia Painter anchored the Blue Hen defense with 22 and 16 digs, respectively.
Taylor Burrell, Stothoff and Malcolm paced William & Mary with 21, 20 and 13 kills respectively. Amy Schwem (14 digs) and Emma Minnick (12 digs) had 38 and 26 assists, respectively, while Anna Porter scooped up 31 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT
Delaware will return to campus on Wednesday, Nov. 9, to close out the regular-season against Chicago State. The home finale is slated for a 6 p.m. start inside Bob Carpenter Center.
