NEWARK, Del. - Delaware men's basketball opened its 2022-23 campaign by cruising to a 78-54 victory against in-state opponent Wilmington on Monday night. The Blue Hens shot 47.5 percent from the floor with Jyáre Davis and Jameer Nelson Jr. combining for 38 points.
With their 12 blocks, the Blue Hens tied a single-game program record. This has been accomplished seven other times, the most recent being against Howard on November 19, 2010.
Davis made his presence known early, notching 16 first-half points to pace the Blue Hens. He finished with 20 points on 6-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the line. The Newark, Delaware native tallied a career-best three deflections and added five rebounds.
A 21-2 run in the middle of the first half allowed the Blue Hens to pull away from their opponent, who held a brief 7-6 lead. The Wildcats did not score for more than 10 minutes after they tallied their ninth point, ending a scoring drought of 9:41. UD held a 34-19 lead at the half.
The Blue Hens were hot out of the break with a 16-2 advantage up to the 15:41 mark, including a 9-0 spurt over the last 1:43 before the media break. Delaware extended its lead to as much as 33 before time ran out. While it was Davis who led the way in the first half, Nelson Jr. shined in the second, exploding for 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. He finished with 18 points in the season opener on a 7-of-12 performance, including 2-of-4 from deep.
UMBC transfer LJ Owens also made some noise in his Blue Hens debut, recording 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting to finish third among Delaware scorers. Fellow transfer, Christian Ray, dominated the glass with a game-high 14 rebounds, just two shy of his career mark set last season as a La Salle Explorer inside the BCC. Rounding out the trio of transfers was Nigel Shadd who tallied five points, five rebounds, and a career-high three blocks.
Rookie Cavan Reilly showed promise in his collegiate debut with nine points off the bench on a 3-of-6 performance, with 2-of-4 from long range.
Delaware returns to action on Friday with its first of five-straight games away from the Bob Carpenter Center.
