Women’s Basketball Storms Past Longwood, 82-62
11/7/2022 10:09:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FARMVILLE, Va. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season in Farmville, Va. Monday evening against Longwood. It was a battle of reigning conference tournament champions as the Blue Hens (1-0) prevailed with a dominating 82-62 victory over the Lancers (0-1). The victory gives first-year head coach Sarah Jenkins her first-career win at the helm.
"I was preaching to our team that we have to play our basketball," said Jenkins. "We want to play fast, we want to get up and down the floor. When we came back from halftime, we had 15 transition points and we told them that we can get this up to 30 points - let's just run! I am very proud of our efforts they put forth tonight."
Trailing by three (17-14) after 10 minutes of play, the Blue Hens turned things around in the second quarter. Nakiyah Mays-Prince made her presence known in her collegiate debut by nabbing her first steal and then laid in her seventh point of the evening. Jewel Smalls followed suit with a steal and lay up to give Delaware the narrow one point lead, 18-17. Longwood responded with an 8-2 run to take the 25-20 advantage with 5:40 left in the quarter. The Blue Hens never wavered and answered right back with a dominating 12-3 run, which was capped by Mia Yanogacio's jumper with five seconds left on the clock, sending Delaware into the break with the 32-28 lead.
It was raining Blue & Gold in Farmville as Jewel Smalls single-handedly turned up the intensity. As part of Delaware outscoring Longwood 27-15, Smalls was responsible for 14 points, draining four triples with ease, building the 16-point cushion, 59-43.
The Blue Hens extended the lead to a game-high 24 points at the 5:29 mark thanks to Kharis Idom finishing off Mays-Prince feed, 72-48. A pair of Longwood freebies ended the game as Delaware cruised to a 20-point season-opening road victory, 82-62.
In 33 minutes of play, Smalls finished the evening with 23 points (8-11 FG, 6-9 3FG), five rebounds and three steals in Delaware's win. Klarke Sconiers followed with 16 points (6-8 FG, 4-5 FT) in her debut in the Blue & Gold to go with four blocks. Makayla Pippin added 14 points (5-10 FG, 4-5 FT), eight rebounds and three blocks while the rookie Mays-Prince was the spark plug off the bench with 13 points (6-11 FG), five assists and five steals. Michelle Ojo pulled down nine rebounds and nabbed three steals.
Janay Turner paced the Lancers with 17 points while Anne-Hamilton LeRoy and Adriana Shipp-Davis added 11 points off the pine.
Delaware finished the evening shooting 49.2 percent (31-63) from the field, 46.7 percent from beyond-the-arc, and made 13 of their 16 free throws. The Blue Hens also held Longwood to 31.7 percent from the field and 8-24 from three-point range. Delaware also outrebounded Longwood 43-36 and forced 22 turnovers.
