Davis Scores Career High as Men’s Basketball Defeats Davidson 69-67

NEWARK, Del. – With four in double figures, led by a career-high 25 points from Jyáre Davis, Delaware men's basketball (4-4) defeated Davidson (6-3), 69-67 inside the Bob Carpenter Center on Saturday.
Delaware paced the game through the opening eight minutes with a 14-9 advantage, shooting 55-percent from the floor, including five of its last seven. Jameer Nelson Jr. accounted for half the UD scoring output up to that moment.
The Blue Hens came alive for a late 7-0 run over the final 1:45 to take their largest lead of the game at 34-23 to end the half, while holding the Wildcats scoreless over the final 2:06. UD worked the paint hard in the opening frame with 18 of its points coming from the lane.
Davis scored a quick four points to end the half for 10 total to lead the Blue Hens heading into the locker room.
Collectively, the Delaware defense held its opponent's leading scorer, Foster Loyer, scoreless at the half. Loyer entered Saturday averaging 22.6 points per game. He'd finish with eight points.
Davidson opened the second period outscoring the Hens 10-4 up to the 13:53 mark. The run concluded with the Wildcats holding Delaware scoreless for the final 2:25 for a 38-33 margin.
After the guests pulled within three at 40-37, the Blue Hens took 21 of the next 31 points to solidify a game-best 14-point lead at 61-57.
The Blue Hens kept pace toward the end, but some costly missed free throws made it a two-point game with five seconds left. Nelson Jr. got a hand on Loyer's potential game-winning three-point attempt, sealing a Delaware win.
The Blue Hens shot a season-high 49.2 percent from the field, topping its previous of 49.1 percent against Cornell on Thursday. UD won the rebounding margin (+7) but lost the turnover battle (-2).
Davis was joined by Nelson Jr. (15), LJ Owens (14), and Gianmarco Arletti (10) in double figures. Christian Ray posted 12 rebounds for his fourth game at 11 or better in the last five contests.
Davis finished 12-of-19 from the field, while grabbing seven boards, dishing out a team-high five assists, collecting three steals, and deflecting three shots.
Delaware is back in action on Wednesday for the latest rendition of the Route 1 Rivalry, hosting Delaware State at 7 p.m.
