DELAND, Fla. – The University of Delaware softball team opened the 2022 season with a pair of wins on Friday at the Stetson Lead-Off Tournament. The Blue Hens defeated Indiana State 4-3 in the first game of the day before beating Stetson by a 3-1 score.
Game One: Delaware 4, Indiana State 3
The Blue Hens cut down the tying run at the plate to end the game and win their season opener.
Brooke Glanden and Kailey Christian both went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI to lead the UD offense. In the circle, Emily Winburn fired 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out one. Megan Stauffer made her Delaware debut and recorded the final out for her first save.
The Blue Hens got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning as Hanna Garber led off with a single and stole second. She came around to score on a two-out single by Glanden.
In the third inning, Julz Garber started a rally with a two-out infield single. After a stolen base and a walk to Brittney Mendoza, Glanden delivered her second RBI single of the game to score Garber. A base knock by Christian brought Mendoza home to give UD a 3-0 lead.
Indiana State got two runs back in the top of the sixth, but the Blue Hens answered with a critical insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. Mendoza led off with a triple over the right fielder's head and crossed the plate on another RBI single by Christian.
In the seventh, the Sycamores put two runners on with two outs. A double down the left field line scored the runner from second, but a perfect relay from Sarah Bessel to Hanna Garber to Halle Kisamore threw out the tying run at home plate to seal the win.
Game Two: Delaware 3, Stetson 1
In her first collegiate appearance, Graceyn Frost was nearly untouchable, retiring 21 of the 25 batters she faced. She carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with eight strikeouts while allowing just one run on two hits and two walks.
Christian had a pair of hits, recording a double and a triple, to lead the offense. Glanden hit a home run and scored two runs while Grace Hrustich had two RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, a Glanden walk and Christian double put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Two outs later, Hrustich lined a two-run double over the left fielder's head to score both runners and give Delaware a 2-0 lead.
Frost, meanwhile, was on cruise control as she retired the first 13 batters of the game before allowing a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth inning. She struck out the next two batters, however, to avoid any damage.
The score remained the same until Glanden extended Delaware's advantage to 3-0 with a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth inning. She launched her first homer of the season well over the fence in right-center field.
Stetson got its first hit of the game to lead off the bottom of the sixth, hitting a leadoff home run to center to cut the lead to 3-1. Frost bounced back by retiring the next three batters on consecutive groundouts.
In the seventh, the Hatters put two runners on base with one out, but Frost shut the door with a pair of strikeouts to clinch her first career win.
The Blue Hens will be right back in action on Saturday when they play two more games at the Stetson Lead-Off Tournament. UD will play Georgia State at 12:30 p.m. and will match up again with the Hatters at 3 p.m.
