ATHENS, Ga. – University of Delaware softball team split a pair of games on Friday to open play at Red and Black Showcase, hosted by the University of Georgia. The Blue Hens began the day with an exciting 6-5 win in extra innings over Purdue, before falling 10-3 in the nightcap to the No. 13 Bulldogs.
Game One: Delaware 6, Purdue 5 (8 innings)
In a back-and-for game, the Blue Hens scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, and then threw out the tying run at the plate to end the game as Delaware won its first extra-inning game of the season. It was UD's first win over a program from a Power 5 conference since 2020 and second since 2005.
Brooke Glanden led the offense with a pair of hits, including a home run, and she scored twice. Halle Kisamore also homered, scored two runs and drove in three.
Graceyn Frost picked up the win with 4.1 innings of relief, striking out eight while allowing just one run. Megan Stauffer also pitched 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while recording a pair of strikeouts.
Purdue struck first in the first inning as a leadoff walk and home run gave the Boilermakers a 2-0 lead just two batters into the game.
The Blue Hens wasted no time in the second inning as Glanden led off with a single and moved to second on a walk to Kailey Christian. Kisamore lined a three-run home run, her third of the season, over the center field fence to give UD a 3-2 lead.
A solo home run by Purdue tied the game in the bottom of the third, but Glanden answered right back in the top of the fourth with a solo shot of her own, her fourth of the season, to make it a 4-3 game.
The Boilermaker again tied the score with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and it remained a 4-4 game until the seventh inning. Kisamore was intentionally walked and, with two outs, broke hard on an Emily Blum grounder. An errant throw allowed Kisamore to cross the plate for a 5-4 Delaware lead.
Purdue again knotted things up with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but Frost was able to strand the winning run at second base with a strikeout.
In the eighth, Brittney Mendoza hit a two-out single and, just like Kisamore an inning earlier, broke hard on a ground ball by Glanden. The throw again was wild as Mendoza came around to score, beating the tag with a beautiful hook slide, to put UD back up front 6-5.
Two singles put the first two runners on for Purdue before Frost got a pair of pop-ups for the first two outs. The next batter lined a single into right field. Blum came up throwing and fired a strike to Kisamore at the plate who applied the tag to end the game.
Game Two: No. 13 Georgia 10, Delaware 3
The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead as a single, double and home run gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The Blue Hens fought right back to tie the game in the second inning as Mendoza walked, Christian reached on an error and Morgan Olynyk singled to load the bases with nobody out. Blum drove in a run with a ground out before Chloe Blantz knocked in a run with her first career hit. Another RBI ground out, this time by Julz Garber, scored Olynyk to knot the score at three.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to make it 5-3. Two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth made it 8-3. A pair of solo home runs in the sixth inning capped the scoring
The Blue & Gold will return to action on Saturday with two more games at the Red and Black Showcase. Delaware will start the day with a 10:30 a.m. matchup against Boston University before playing in the evening game at 6 p.m. against Purdue.
