ATHENS, Ga. – University of Delaware softball team lost both of its games on Saturday at the Red and Black Showcase, falling 8-4 to Boston University before having a rally come up just short in a 3-2 setback to Purdue. With the two losses, the Blue Hens slip to 4-4 on the season
Game One: Boston University 8, Delaware 4
Boston University scored five unearned runs on three UD errors to defeat the Blue & Gold.
Brooke Glanden led the Delaware offense with two hits while Kailey Christian had a hit and two RBI. Brittney Mendoza and Chloe Blantz were each on base twice and scored a run.
It was the Blue Hens that jumped on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out before Christian drove in Brooke Glanden with a fielder's choice.
BU scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1, but Delaware had a quick answer in the top of the third. Glanden led off with a double to left and was replaced by Erica Paisley as a pinch runner. After a ground out and a walk put runners on the corners, Christian delivered an RBI single to left to score Paisley. Mendoza eventually crossed the plate on a passed ball to knot the score at three.
The Terriers retook the lead 4-3 with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but again the Blue Hens had a quick response. Blantz lined a one-out double down the right field line and, two batters later, scored on an RBI single by Hanna Garber to make it a 4-4 game.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Terrier again retook the lead as two runs scored on a fielding error. A two-run home run in the sixth inning capped the scoring as UD fell 8-4.
Game Two: Purdue 3, Delaware 2
The Blue Hens had the tying run on base in each of the last two innings, but could not complete the rally as they dropped their second game of the day.
Megan Stauffer started in the circle and fired a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits.
Purdue scored a run in the top of the first on an RBI single and then extended its lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning.
The UD bats were quiet early on, only putting together two singles through the first five innings. Hanna Garber got the offense going in the bottom of the sixth inning, lining a one-out double off the wall in left-center field. Glanden followed that up with a run-scoring single up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-1. Delaware put runners on the corners with just one out, but a hard-hit line drive was snagged by the pitcher and turned into a double play.
In the seventh, Christian singled and Morgan Olynyk reached on an error to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Grace Hrustich lined a one-out pinch-hit single to score Christian and make it a one-run game. However, with the tying and winning runs on base, a popup and ground out ended the game.
The Blue & Gold will close out play at the Red and Black Showcase on Sunday morning when the Blue Hens play Boston University in a 10:30 a.m. contest
