Offense Breaks Out in 9-1 Win Over Boston University

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Delaware softball team saw its offense explode for 13 hits, including three home runs, and Kate Hondru hit a pinch-hit, walk-off double in a six-inning 9-1 victory over Boston University on Sunday at the Red and Black Showcase. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 5-4 on the season.

Hanna Garber led the offense with a 4-for-4 performance with a pair of home runs, and scored four times. Morgan Olynyk had two hits, including her first home run in a Delaware uniform, and drove in two. Brittney Mendoza also was on base three times with a single, double and a walk.

Emily Winburn fired a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run on three hits while finishing with three strikeouts.

The Blue Hens jumped on the board right away in the first inning as consecutive leadoff singles by Garber and Brooke Glanden put runners on the corners with nobody out. Halle Kisamore pushed Garber across the plate with a sacrifice fly to give UD a 1-0 lead.

Delaware broke it open with four runs in the third inning. Garber again started things off with a single and, with one out, stole second and went to third on an error. For the second time, Kisamore drove her in with an RBI single. Mendoza greeted a new BU pitcher with a first-pitch double into the right-center field gap that scored Kisamore all the way from first. Mendoza was thrown out at third on the play, but Kailey Christian followed that with a walk before Olynyk lined a two-run home run down the left field line put the Blue Hens up 5-0.

After the Terriers scored a run in the top of the fourth, Delaware responded right away with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Garber led off with a solo home run, going opposite field over the left field wall for her first homer of the season. With two outs, Mendoza walked and Christian and Olynyk singled to load the bases. Chloe Blantz lined an RBI single into right field to make it a 7-1 game.

Garber came up again in the bottom of the fifth and launched her second home run in as many innings well over the right field wall.

In the sixth inning, Bailey White drew a two-out, pinch-hit walk in her first career at-bat. Olynyk was hit by a pitch to move White into scoring position before Hondru lifted a 3-2 pitch for a walk-off double as White crossed the plate to win by the run-rule, 9-1.

The Blue Hens will be back in action next weekend when they travel to North Carolina for the NC State Invitational. UD will Bowling Green and Central Connecticut State on Friday before matching up against the Falcons again on Saturday. The weekend will wrap up with two contests against the host Wolfpack on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
