NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team (1-2) downed La Salle (2-1), 14-9, Wednesday night, in its first win of the season. Freshman Delaney McDaniel led the way offensively for the Blue Hens with five points on two goals and three assists.
"I'm proud of the team win that we had tonight," said head coach Amy Altig. "A lot of people stepped up in big moments to make some big plays. It was really great to see the team bounce back and play hard for a win tonight!"
Lizzie Hsu got on the board early, driving through the right side of the eight-meter and scored within the first 30 seconds of the game, Delaware's fastest goal of the season.
The Explorers answered back, netting three straight goals to give La Salle a 3-1 lead, halfway through the first quarter.
Senior captain Danika Swech tied the game, 3-3, with back-to-back goals, with her second goal assisted by Riley Gillin.
Lizzie Yurchak pulled a split dodge on her defender in the middle of the eight, scoring her first goal of the season giving the Blue Hens a one-goal lead. La Salle tied the game, 4-4, to end the first quarter.
McDaniel netted her first career goal, in the third minute of the second quarter, on a free position shot on the left hash. She drove into the eight, forcing the ball into the back of the net even after being pushed to the ground by her defenders.
Sydni Rosa gave the Blue Hens a two-goal lead after she took her defender one-on-one pulling her to the right side of the eight and sinking the shot. The Explorers answered back with two goals to tie the game, 6-6.
Gillin and Kendra Schweizer each scored on assists from McDaniel to give UD a two-goal lead. Mae Dickens scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Gillin in the last 20 seconds of the second quarter, making the score 9-6 at the half.
La Salle scored once at the beginning of the third quarter (9-7) before the Hens went on a 5-0 scoring streak that stretched into the fourth quarter. Hsu scored the game-winning goal on an assist from McDaniel, before scoring once more to complete her hat trick for the night.
Rosa, Yurchak, and McDaniel each scored their second goal of the game in the 5-0 scoring streak, stretching Delaware's lead, 14-7. La Salle ended the game with two more goals to settle the 14-9 final.
Goalkeeper Sophia Foohey (1-1) earned her first win of the season, making eight saves in the cage and earning a .471 save percentage. Starting La Salle goalie Julia Dellaratta (1-1) made four first half saves, while Kelli McGroarty sent away eight shots in the last 30 minutes of play.
