McCarthy Makes 17 Saves in Loss to No. 4 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team was topped by No. 4 Maryland, 15-2, Tuesday evening.
"Our team played with a lot of heart and never gave up," said head coach Amy Altig. "Mercy came in and played incredibly well, she was the difference maker for us tonight. Looking forward to growing from this game as we look ahead to Georgetown on Saturday."
In the first quarter, Maryland got off to a hot start, scoring eight goals. Sophia Foohey tallied four saves in the first 15 minutes. The Terps took 13 shots, while the Blue Hens took two.
Delaware made a goalie change in the second quarter which proved to slow Maryland down. Mercy McCarthy made seven saves while only allowing two goals in the second period, allowing the Terps to take a 10-0 lead at the half.
Maryland scored twice in the third period, before the Hens snapped their 12-goal scoring streak. Danika Swech cut into the middle of the eight and quick-sticked a pass from Riley Gillin into the back of the net, scoring her fifth goal of the season.
The Terps scored at the end of the third quarter and at the beginning of of the fourth quarter giving them a 14-1 lead.
Sydni Rosa drew a foul in the eight to give her a free position attempt, where she was fouled again and moved to the top of the eight for her second attempt. She took two steps in before firing her shot in the top left corner of the goal, notching her fifth goal of the season.
Maryland scored one final goal with under two minutes left on the clock to finalize the 15-2 score.
McCarthy made 17 stops in the cage, a career-high and fifth all-time in Delaware's individual single-game records. She also boasted a .708 save percentage in her three quarters played. The Blue Hen's 21 total saves ties for fifth all-time in single-game records.
Maryland took 39 shots, with 36 shots on goal, which ranks first in all-time single game records in shots on goal against. The Blue Hens had 13 shots and 11 shots on goal. The Terps also picked up 28 ground balls to Delaware's 12.
The Blue Hens are on the road once again with a game at Georgetown in Washington, D.C., Saturday at 3 p.m.
