Softball Preview: Blue Hen Invitational

» The University of Delaware softball team will play its home opener this weekend as the squad welcomes Penn State and Canisius to the Delaware Softball Diamond for the Blue Hen Invitational. Inclement weather in the forecast has altered the weekend schedule and the Blue Hens will now play a doubleheader against the Nittany Lions on Friday and two games against the Golden Griffins on Sunday. Both doubleheaders will start at 12 p.m.

» The Blue Hens are 12-6 on the season following a 4-1 showing at the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament last weekend. Senior Brittney Mendoza was named the CAA Player of the Week on Tuesday after batting .563 (9-16) in UD's five games, reaching base safely in all five games with a home run and two doubles while recording five RBIs and three runs.

» Penn State is 9-10 overall and has dropped its last four games, including a 4-2 setback at No. 13 Duke on Tuesday. The Nittany Lions are batting .266 as a team and are led by Cassie Lindmark who is hitting at a .383 clip, while Ally Kurland is batting .349 with team-highs of six home runs, nine doubles and 16 RBI. Bailey Parshall leads the pitching staff with a 2.04 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 68.2 innings pitched while the entire staff owns a 3.29 ERA.

» Canisius sits at 8-5 on the season after going 4-1 at the UNC Wilmington Tournament last weekend, including a pair of run-rule victories over NC Central. The Griffs are batting .324 as a team and are 24-27 in stolen base attempts. Christie McGee-Ross leads six players batting over .300, hitting at a .465 clip, while Gianna Fazzolari leads the team with five home runs and 12 RBI. In the circle, Megan Giese has recorded a 1.96 ERA with two wins and three saves, while leading the pitching staff with 39 strikeouts in 36.2 innings.
