Hutchins and Loynd Homer, Bullpen Shines in 6-3 Win Over No. 24 Maryland

NEWARK, Del. – Jordan Hutchins and Joey Loynd each homered while three Blue Hen pitchers combined to throw 7.2 scoreless innings as the Delaware baseball team posted an impressive 6-3 win over No. 24 Maryland Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware, which topped fourth-ranked Notre Dame, 5-4, on Feb. 20, posted its second victory over a ranked opponent this season, with wins over ACC and Big Ten foes.
UD starter Dan Frake allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits in an inning and a third, but the Blue Hen relief trio of Wyatt Nelson, Luke Pizzico and Mike Biasiello shut down the Terps from there.
Maryland opened the scoring in the top of the second when Kevin Keister hit a sacrifice fly, while an RBI single by Chris Alleyne made it a 2-0 game. Nelson then relieved Frake and immediately recorded a strikeout, but then walked Nick Lorussa to force home a run.
However Nelson then got Maxwell Costes to line out to first, before tossing three perfect innings. Meanwhile Delaware got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Dominic Ragazzo led off with a walk, moved to third on a JJ Freeman single and scored when Jake Dunion reached on an error by Terps shortstop Matt Shaw.
With two away in the fifth, Hutchins belted a pitch over the rightfield fence for his first homer of the year, drawing the Blue Hens within a run.
In the seventh Aidan Kane stroked a one-out single to center, while Loynd followed with a two-run blast to left, his team-leading fourth longball of the year, to put Delaware in front, 4-3.
Kane then singled home Dunion to tack on an insurance run in the eighth, while Hutchins worked a bases loaded walk later in the frame to make it a three-run game.
Maryland loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Biasiello struck out pinch hitter Ian Petrutz on three pitches to earn his second save of the year.
Pizzico, who fired perfect innings in the sixth and seventh, picked up the win in his season debut, before Biasiello allowed one hit and struck out two during the final two frames.
Kane and Hutchins each recorded two hits at the plate for UD while Freeman, Dunion and Loynd added one apiece.

"This was another fun win against a Top 25 team. Just like against Notre Dame, we got good pitching. You couldn't ask for more of Nelson, Pizzico and Biasiello. Those guys gave up zero runs on one hit in 7.2 innings; that's pretty good. So I hope that's a shot in the arm to the pitching staff and the rest of the club. We also got some timely hitting. Loynd hit a homer on a hit-and-run which is pretty rare, so that was fun for him. Plus Dunion had a big hit, and Hutch played his best game of the year. So it was a good overall game for us."
