Rowing Opens 2022 Season with Dominant Showing Against Saint Joseph and Lehigh

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Delaware rowing team took to the water Saturday, Mar. 19, to open the 2022 season in a tri-race with Saint Joseph and Lehigh on Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.
"It was a strong start," said head coach Kevin Gruber. "There's always room to grow but this was a fun way to kickoff spring racing. Very proud of how we attacked the course."
The Blue Hens suited up for the Varsity Fours and Varsity Eights events with nine miles per hour head wind gusting to 15 and the current being 2890 cfs.
Leading the way in the lone Varsity Fours race with a first-place finish was the lineup of c-Amanda Schlosser, 4-Hanaa Abdallah, 3-Maddy Singh, 2-Stirling North and 1-Morgan Kline-Hill time of 8:35.9. Saint Joseph's followed with a time of 8:59.9, good enough for second place while Leigh finished in third with a time of 9:22.5.
Delaware captured the win with a time of 7:24.3 in the Varsity Eights race with a lineup of c-Hannah Kirk, 8-Cornelia Meiss, 7-Julia Rothstein, 6-Jessica Dobson, 5-Hannah Walsh, 4-Madeline Curran, 3-Sloane Matthews, 2-Delaney Denegar and 1-Hannah Towhey. Lehigh followed in second with a time of 7:32.8 while Saint Joseph's finished in third with a time of 7:33.9
In the second Varsity Eights race, the boat filled with c-Tierney Ellis, 8-Maria Dupnock, 7-Alli Burns, 6-Alexia Skor, 5-McKenna Twitchell, 3-Maya Ferrer, 3-Sophia Talley, 2-Ava Norton and 1-Lydia Greenwood placed in second with a time of 7:45.2. Saint Joseph's earned the win with a time of 7:39.7 while Lehigh took third with a time of 7:56.9.
Delaware rounded out the final Varsity Eights race with two boats capturing first and third-place finishes. Shining for first place was the lineup of c-Claire Higgins-Hart, 8-Alexis O'Keefe, 7-Olivia Hollingsworth, 6-Bridget Bergan, 5-Natalija Penev, 4-Elena Sherman, 3-Margo Harlan, 2-Blair Kennedy and 1-Meredith Blowman with a time of 7:53.5. The third-place finishers with the time of 8:28.7 was c-Leah Prentice, 8-Elizabeth Fowler, 7-Raquel Levit, 6-Makana Steinmetz, 5-Madeline Climie, 4-Gabriella Gherardi, 3-Genevieve Kelly, 2-Abdallah and 1-Mariah Noll. Saint Joseph's finished the afternoon in second place with a time of 8:15.9 while Lehigh earned a fourth place finish with a time of 8:38.5.
