Women's Lacrosse Edged by UMBC

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team was edged by UMBC, 14-11, Wednesday afternoon in Delaware Stadium.
Riley Gillin tallied a career-high six points on three goals and three assists, while Danielle Livornese added a career-high three goals in the loss.
On a cold and drizzly day in Newark, the Blue Hens (2-7) opened the game with a goal by Gillin in the 14th minute. Delaware ended the first period knotted with the Retrievers, 3-3, with goals by Lizzie Yurchak and Danika Swech to tie the game.
UMBC (6-3) opened the second period with a three-goal scoring streak, pulling ahead for a 6-3 lead. The Blue Hens answered back with three straight goals to tie the game, 6-6, with two of the three goals assisted by Gillin.
However the Retrievers ended the second period with two goals to take an 8-6 lead into halftime, before opening the third quarter with another tally.
Livornese responded with back-to-back goals, both assisted by Delaney McDaniel, to bring the Blue Hens within a goal at 9-8. UMBC ended the third quarter with one more goal, making it a 10-8 game..
Gillin pulled Delaware within one goal once again at the beginning of the fourth quarter, before the Retrievers were able to respond to make it an 11-9 game.
McDaniel was assisted by Gillin with seven minutes left on the clock to shrink UMBC's lead once again, but the Retrievers ended the fourth quarter on a shooting spree by netting three goals. Gillin was able to score in between UMBC's hot streak, finalizing the 14-11 score.
The Blue Hens held the advantage in shots (41-29), shots on goal (27-19) and ground balls (22-15). UMBC's Lexi Roberts made 16 saves in the cage, while Delaware only made five stops.
Delaware hits the road for a non-conference matchup at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. on Saturday at 12 noon.
