WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of Delaware softball team used timely hitting to bounce back and defeat UNCW 8-3 on Sunday afternoon to salvage a game in the series. With the victory, the Blue Hens improve to 17-10 overall and 1-2 in CAA play, while the Seahawks fall to 20-5 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Graceyn Frost fired a complete game to pick up her eighth win of the season. She struck out two while scattering eight hits and allowing just three runs.
Brooke Glanden had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the offense. Hanna Garber singled twice and walked while scoring two runs and Sarah Bessel was on base twice with a pair of walks.
The Blue Hens jumped on the board quickly in the first inning, scoring three runs without the benefit of a hit. They loaded the bases on a walk, hit-by-pitch and error before Emily Blum stepped up and lined one into center field. The ball glanced off the fielder's glove for a two-base error as all three runners came around to score and give UD a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Bessel drew a one-out walk and stole second. Garber flew one to the fence in center field that again was dropped for an error. Bessel crossed the plate to make it 4-0 as Garber made it all the way to third.
UNCW got a run back in the bottom of the second, but the Blue Hens plated three more in the top of the fourth to open things up at 7-1. Garber got things started with a one-out single and she raced around to score on an RBI double by Glanden. One out later, Brittney Mendoza grounded a double down the left field line to score Grace Rudolph, who had pinch ran for Glanden. Kailey Christian capped the inning with an RBI single that allowed Mendoza to score.
A two-out RBI single by Glanden pushed home Chloe Blantz, who had reached on an error, in the top of the fifth to extend Delaware's lead to 8-1.
The Seahawks scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to provide the final 8-3 score.
The Blue Hens will return to Delaware Softball Stadium to start a stretch seven of their next eight games at home. Delaware will host Monmouth in a nonconference midweek contest on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
