BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Delaware softball team received strong pitching performances and timely hitting and defense to pave the way to a pair of wins on Saturday at the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament. The Blue Hens defeated SIUE 5-4 in the morning before returning in the evening for a 7-4 victory over the host Owls. With the two wins, UD improves to 11-6 on the season.
Game One: Delaware 5, SIUE 4
For the second-straight day, the Blue Hens overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat SIUE.
Kailey Christian was the lone Blue Hen to register multiple hits, while Halle Kisamore was on base twice with a walk and a home run.
Emily Winburn picked up her fifth win of the season with 6.2 innings of relief, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four.
The Cougars took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as five of the first six batters registered hits.
The Blue Hens answered right back in the bottom of the second inning as Christian led off with a single. Walks to Morgan Olynyk and Grace Hrustich loaded the bases before a wild pitch allowed Christian to score. Jayla Brooks followed that with a two-run single, her first collegiate hit, to knot the score at three.
Kisamore gave UD the lead as she led off the bottom of the third with her fifth home run of the season, lining a shot over the left field fence to make it 4-3.
In the fifth, Brooke Glanden led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Grace Rudolph. She advanced to third on a fly out and crossed the plate on a two-out, RBI single by Christian to make it 5-3.
SIUE scored a run in the sixth to make it a one-run game and then loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. However, Winburn fielded a grounder and threw the runner out at the plate before getting the final out on a ground ball to first.
Game Two: Delaware 7, FAU 4
Graceyn Frost carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and the Blue Hens defeated the Owls for their second win of the day.
Frost went 6.0-plus innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out six. Megan Stauffer got the final three outs for her second save of the season.
Hanna Garber registered her second four-hit game of the season while scoring three runs. Brittney Mendoza finished a triple shy of the cycle while driving in three runs and scoring twice.
It was UD that jumped on the board first, as the first three batters reached base safely. Garber led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single by Glanden. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Kisamore drove them home with a two-run double to give Delaware an early 2-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the fifth when Garber singled, stole second base and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a wild throw by the catcher. In the sixth, Mendoza led off with a double and eventually scored on a two-out RBI single by Chloe Blantz to make it 4-0.
After FAU got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning, Mendoza provided insurance with a three-run home run, her second of the season, over the center field fence to extend UD's lead to 7-1.
The Owls got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh, but Stauffer shut the door to give Delaware the 7-4 win.
The Blue & Gold will wrap up play at the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament on Sunday when the squad takes on the Owls again at 12:15 p.m.
