Winburn’s 10 Strikeouts Leads Blue Hens to 3-0 Shutout Over FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Emily Winburn struck out a career-high 10 batters and the University of Delaware softball team finished off a strong showing at the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament with a 3-0 win over the host Owls. With the victory, the Blue Hens went 4-1 on the weekend and improved to 12-6 on the season.

Winburn allowed just six hits and two walks to go with her 10 strikeouts, recording her sixth win and first shutout of the season.

Kailey Christian led the UD offense with two of the team's five hits and she also walked once. Brooke Glanden was also on base twice with a home run and a walk.

It was a pitcher's duel for most of the game as neither team could muster many scoring chances through the first five innings. FAU had the best chance in the fourth inning as a leadoff double and ground out put a runner at third with just one out. Winburn responded with consecutive strikeouts to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.

In the top of the sixth inning, Glanden lifted her sixth home run of the season – a two-out solo shot over the center field fence – to break the deadlock and give the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead.

A single, error and walk loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh. Julz Garber fouled off five two-strike pitches before working an 11-pitch walk to force home Emily Blum. Hanna Garber then followed with an RBI single to allow Chloe Blantz to score and extend UD's lead to 3-0.

FAU put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Winburn shut the door to clinch the shutout.

The Blue & Gold will play their home opener next weekend when the squad hosts Penn State and Canisius for the Blue Hen Invitational. Delaware will play the Nittany Lions once each on Friday and Saturday, and will take on the Golden Griffins on Saturday and Sunday.
