NEWARK, Del. - After a close game in the first half, the Delaware women's lacrosse team (1-5) fell to Army (5-2), 19-9, Wednesday afternoon.
"As a team we need to string a full four quarters together and stay strong for 60 minutes," said head coach Amy Altig. "Danielle Livornese and our draw group gave us a lot of great opportunities tonight. There is a lot to learn from tonight as we have a quick turnaround with a very talented Temple team on Saturday."
On a chilly and rainy afternoon, Halen Saroney started the Blue Hens off with a goal in the first two minutes of the game, she was assisted by Delaney McDaniel.
Army's Julia Gorajek tied the game at 1-1 just 40 seconds later, before Riley Gillin netted her first goal of the game to give Delaware the lead once again.
Two minutes later, Danika Swech drove in from the left wing, forcing the ball past Lacey Bartholomay and into the back of the cage. Army's Kathleen Sullivan scored three straight goals to give the Black Knights a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Army scored two goals at the beginning of the second quarter before Swech scored her second goal of the game on a free position making the score 6-4. The Black Knights scored another goal with eight minutes left in the first half.
Sydni Rosa was able to drive to the goal from the left hash and netted her first goal of the day on a woman-up possession with five minutes left in the first quarter. Army scored the last goal of the first half setting an 8-5 score.
After halftime the Black Knights got on a hot streak, scoring three-straight goals stretching their lead to 11-5.
Lizzie Hsu answered back netting her first goal of the game on a woman-up possession, assisted by Gillin. Rosa then netted her second goal to make it an 11-7 game.
Gillin then scored on a give-and-go pass from McDaniel after Army netted another goal. The Black Knights ended the third period with two more goals, stretching their lead to 14-8.
While Saroney was able to net one more goal for the Blue Hens with under 10 minutes remaining in the game, Army closed out the fourth quarter with five goals, settling the 19-9 score.
Gillin led Delaware with three points on two goals and one assist, while Army's Sullivan had a game-high 11 points (6g, 5a). Sullivan's 11 points and six goals tie for first in the individual Delaware Stadium records.
Army led in shots (29-24), shots on goal (23-17) and saves (8-4), but the Blue Hens held the advantage in ground balls (19-18) and draw controls (18-14).
Delaware hits the road for an away game at No. 18 Temple, Saturday at 1 p.m. in Philadelphia.
