TOWSON, Md. – Delaware pitching shut down Towson for the second straight day as the Blue Hens posted another 4-1 victory over the Tigers Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
Joey Silan allowed just one hit and struck out seven batters in six scoreless innings on the mound to pick up his first win of the year, before Dom Velazquez earned the save after scattering four hits and striking out five during the final three frames.
Jordan Hutchins gave Delaware the early lead with an RBI single that drove home Aidan Kane in the top of the second, while Bryce Greenly led off the third with a single and eventually crossed the plate on a Jake Dunion single to make it a 2-0 game.
The Blue Hens added their third run of the day in the sixth when Dunion stroked a leadoff double, moved to third on a Kane double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Loynd.
The Tigers finally got on board in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI triple by Danny Becerra, but Velazquez then struck out the next two batters to escape further damage.
Delaware got the run right back in the top of the ninth as Hutchins led off with a single and scored on a JJ Freeman sacrifice fly. Towson used a pair of singles to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom half, but Velazquez retired Jordan Peyton on a flyout to center to end the game.
Dunion finished 4 for 4 at the plate for the Blue Hens, while Greenly added three hits and Hutchins contributed two.
Delaware, which extended its winning streak to four, has allowed just one run in consecutive league games for the first time since back to back victories over Hofstra and Charleston in the 2018 CAA Tournament.
Jim Sherman
"We got great starting pitching out of Joey Silan today, he was sharp and crisp with all of his pitches. Dom Velazquez also did a great job, striking out five in the last three innings. Jake Dunion had a good day with four hits; it's good to see him get going again. We've got to play well again tomorrow like we have the first two games."
