Rowing Puts Together Strong Showing at 39th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Delaware rowing team took to the water Saturday, Apr. 2, at the 39th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta, hosted by Temple University on Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. Seeing the river for the second time this season, the Blue Hens used it to their advantage totaling 39 points to finish the day seventh overall.
"We raced with lots of spirit today," said head coach Kevin Gruber. "Six-across, heats-to-finals racing is always exciting, we responded well to the environment."
The Varsity Fours team opened the day in heat two by finishing the race in 7:36.90 to place third, behind the hosts Temple (7:21.35) and West Virginia University (7:26.35). The boat had a lineup of c-Hannah Kirk, 4- Lydia Greenwood, 3-Maya Ferrer, 2-Maddy Singh and 1-Stirling North.
Capturing second place in heat one to advance to the finals of the Varsity Eights with a time of 6:36.17 was the lineup of c-Tierney Ellis, 8-Cornelia Meiss, 7-Julia Rothstein, 6-Jessica Dobson, 5-Hannah Walsh, 4-Madeline Curran, 3-Sloane Matthews, 2-Delaney Denegar and 1-Hannah Towhey. The boat finished the day in fifth place with a time of 6:33.96.
Also finishing in second place in heat three to advance to the finals of the second Varsity Eights race with a time of 6:55.28 was the lineup of c-Amanda Schlosser, 8-Hanaa Abdallah, 7-Alli Burns, 6-Maria Dupnock, 5-McKenna Twitchell, 4-Alexia Skor, 3-Morgan Kline-Hill, 2-Ava Norton and 1-Sophia Talley. The boat finished the outing in fourth place with a time of 6:58.61.
The third Varsity Eights boat finished the race with a time of 7:05.52, which was good enough to place second. The boat's lineup was c-Claire Higgins-Hart, 8-Alexis O'Keefe, 7-Olivia Hollingsworth, 6-Bridget Bergan, 5-Felicia Marcozzi, 4-Elena Sherman, 3-Natalija Penev, 2-Blair Kennedy and 1-Meredith Blowman.
The Novice Eights boat consisting of a lineup of c-Grace Phillips, 8-Elizabeth Fowler, 7-Mariah Noll, 6- Abigail Spangler, 5-Madeline Climie, 4-Sara Girardi, 3-Makana Steinmetz, 2-Raquel Levit and 1-Margo Harlan finished in second place with a time of 7:08.84.

The Blue Hens return to action on next weekend, Apr. 9-10, for a two-day race at the Knecht Cup Regatta on Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
