MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Charleston scored four runs in a decisive sixth inning rally and held on to defeat Delaware, 6-5, Saturday night at Patriots Point.
The Blue Hens took the early lead in the top of the second when Joseph Carpenter led off with a single, moved to third on an Aidan Kane single and scored on a Joey Loynd fielder's choice.
The Cougars tied the game in the third on an RBI triple by Tyler Sorrentino, while Tanner McCallister roped an RBI single in the fourth to give Charleston a 2-1 lead.
Jordan Hutchins opened the top of the fifth by crushing a homer to left, and after John Weglarz crossed the plate when JJ Freeman reached on an error, Carpenter doubled home Freeman to put Delaware in front, 4-2.
However the Cougars then scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. Patrick Sanchez ignited the rally with an RBI double, and after Cam Dean ripped an RBI single, another run crossed the plate on a throwing error. Dean then scored on a Sorrentino groundout as Charleston extended its lead to 6-4.
Carpenter led off the seventh with a double, and after moving to third on a groundout by Jake Dunion, he scored when Kane grounded out to short as the Blue Hens pulled within a run. Loynd then doubled to leftcenter, but Cougars reliever William Privette retired the final seven batters he faced to seal the victory.
Carpenter finished 3 for 5 at the plate with a pair of doubles, increasing his CAA-leading total to 18, while Loynd added a pair of hits.
UD starter Joey Silan recorded a solid outing on the mound, allowing three runs and striking out five in five innings of work. Zach Klapak took the loss after giving up three runs, before Mike Biasiello retired all eight batters he faced out of the pen.
Jim Sherman
"We played well except for the sixth inning, and got solid pitching out of Silan and Biasiello. Carpenter also had a good offensive day with three hits. We are just snake bitten with these one-run losses this month."
