Women's Lacrosse Drops Conference Home Opener to Hofstra

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team dropped its conference home opener to Hofstra, 16-11, Wednesday evening. In a tight game with nine ties throughout the first 46 minutes, Hofstra pulled away with the lead in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Hens (3-9, 0-2 CAA) started off the day with a goal by Danielle Livornese within the first two minutes on an assist from Delaney McDaniel. Delaware scored twice more in the first period, while the Pride scored three times to end the first 15 minutes tied at 3-3.
Delaware opened the second period with two goals only for Hofstra (7-5, 1-1 CAA) to answer back twice to enter halftime knotted at 5-5.
Both teams battled for the advantage, only holding a narrow one-goal lead through the first three quarters. With 3:27 left in the third, Lizzie Yurchak found the back of the net to complete her fourth career hat trick and give the Blue Hens the 10-9 lead heading into the final quarter.
Hofstra opened the fourth quarter by scoring three-straight goals to regain the lead for good, 12-10. Delaware took advantage of a woman-up situation with 9:56 remaining as Yurchak found a running Riley Gillin to pull within one goal, 12-11. The Pride then turned up the intensity and never looked back, scoring four unanswered goals, capped by Kerry Walser, to settle the 16-11 final.
Blue Hen goalie Mercy McCarthy made 10 saves as Jess Smith sent away seven to lead the Pride to victory.
The Pride outshot the Blue Hens 32-21, taking 26 shots on goal to Delaware's 18. Hofstra also had an 18-13 advantage in draw controls, while the Hens had a 16-12 advantage in ground balls.
Delaware is back in action at home for a CAA doubleheader when the women host William & Mary at 3 p.m. after the men's game against Hofstra at 12 p.m.
