Women's Lacrosse Defeats William & Mary, 13-11, in First CAA Win

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team earned its first conference win of the season, defeating William & Mary 13-11 Saturday afternoon. Senior co-captain Danika Swech tallied a career-high four goals and six points with her addition of two assists.
"This was a great team win for our program," said head coach Amy Altig. "Our whole team came together and each player played a part in this win. Steph Lazo and Riley Smith did an incredible job of preparing our team for today, I appreciate all the work they continuously put in each and every day. Proud of our whole squad today!"
William & Mary (4-9, 0-3 CAA) got on the board first to open the game, scoring in the first two minutes. Both teams went on an eight-minute scoring drought before Meghan Johnson scored her second goal of the season to get the Blue Hens rolling on a three-goal scoring streak. Delaware ended the first period up 3-2 after the Tribe snuck in one more goal in the last two minutes of the quarter.
Delaware (4-9, 1-2 CAA) knotted the game 4-4 with a goal by Lizzie Hsu after William & Mary opened the second quarter with two goals. The Tribe added two more goals before freshman Sam Schelling took it coast-to-coast to score her first collegiate goal, ending the first half with the Blue Hens down, 6-5.
The Blue Hens responded in a big way scoring five unanswered goals in the third quarter, leaving the Tribe scoreless. Danika Swech earned a hat trick after scoring back-to-back goals to open the period, Halen Saroney scored her first of the day while Danielle Livornese and Lizzie Hsu each scored their second goals of the day, ending the first 45 min with a 10-6 lead.
Hsu opened the final quarter with a hat trick, scoring on a feed from Saroney. The Tribe snapped their 18-minute scoring drought and netted three straight goals, trimming Delaware's lead 11-9. The teams went back and forth in the final 10 minutes of the game, each netting twice more finalizing the 13-11 score.
Goalkeeper Mercy McCarthy recorded her third-straight game with 10 or more saves, stopping 12 shots by the Tribe and boasting a .522 save percentage. William & Mary's Elise Palmer made eight saves with a .381 save percentage.
Both teams took 32 shots, with the Tribe holding 23-21 edge in shots on goal and a 30-20 advantage in ground balls. The Blue Hens dominated in draw controls, 22-6, as Livornese led the way with nine.
The Blue Hens hit the road for their next two games, making their first stop in Elon, N.C., with a conference game against Elon Saturday, April 16 at 12 p.m.
