Blue Hens Win Exciting CAA Match Over JMU

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team won an exciting and unique match on Saturday, defeating James Madison 4-3 in a CAA matchup. The match started at the Delaware Tennis Courts but then moved indoors to the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington due to inclement weather. With the victory, the Blue Hens extend their season-long winning streak to six matches and improve to 11-8 on the season and a perfect 3-0 against CAA opponents.
The match was a thriller from the beginning as the teams split the first two doubles matches. It all came down to the top position where Pierce Gilheany and James Wilkinson out-dueled their opponents for an exciting 7-6 win to clinch the point for Delaware.
JMU came back to win the first two singles matches at No. 1 and No. 4, but Tobias Sonne pulled UD even with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6. Pascal Wagemaker came away with 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3, but the Dukes knotted things up again with a victory at No. 3.
The drama came about during the match at No. 5 singles. Guilherme Valdoleiros and his opponent split the first two sets as Valdoleiros won 6-4, before dropping a 7-5 set to tie things up. The skies opened however, and the match was unable to finish outdoors. The teams made the short trip to the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington and the two individuals resumed their match at the start of the third set. Valdoleiros took control and claimed the final set 6-0 to win his match and clinch the team decision for the Blue & Gold.
"What a battle! I am so pumped for our guys for this victory as they deserve it," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "I am so impressed with their resiliency and effort and especially their mental toughness. In doubles, we came firing at No. 2 and took care of business relatively quickly. At No. 1, James and Pierce played smart, disciplined tennis throughout the entire match, and they were able to pull it out in the tiebreaker to clinch the point for us. In singles, Tobias got us up to 2-0 by dominating his court and Gui showed his courage and what it means to be an experienced player as he came out and took that match to give us the victory. We will build from this as we prepare for NJIT tomorrow."
The Blue Hens will be right back on the court on Sunday when they host NJIT at the Delaware Tennis Courts. The math is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
