NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware baseball team edged Northeastern, 5-4, Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium, setting up a showdown during tomorrow's regular season finale to determine the final spot for the CAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens, who need to sweep the Huskies during the weekend series, have now won the first two games to set up tomorrow's battle on Senior Day. Delaware improves to 25-25 overall and 8-14 in the CAA, as the Blue Hens are a half game behind Northeastern at 27-27-1 and 9-14 in league play.
UD struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Bryce Greenly led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt single by JJ Freeman and scored on an RBI groundout by Joey Loynd.
Greenly then singled home Jordan Hutchins and John Weglarz in the bottom of the second to increase the Blue Hens' lead to three.
The Huskies, who were held without a hit through the first four innings, pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Jeff Costello and JP Olson. However Delaware got a run right back in the bottom half when Greenly led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
NU's Spenser Smith doubled home a run in the sixth and then scored on a single by Cosetello to make it a one-run game. But the Blue Hens held on from there to record the victory.
The Huskies loaded the bases in the seventh, but Dom Velazquez struck out Smith looking to escape the jam. Northeastern put two more runners on base in the eighth, before Greenly retired Justin Bosland on a flyout to center. Greenly then retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the victory.
Velazquez earned his fourth win of the season after allowing two runs in three innings of relief, before Greenly picked up his third save with 1.2 hitless frames. The Blue Hens walked 10 batters on the day, but the Huskies stranded 13 runners on base.
Jim Sherman
"We had 10 walks, but we came through on the mound when we needed to and pitched out of those jams. Silan settled down after the first two innings, and then Velazquez and Greenly finished it out. We had some timely hitting, and it was close to a repeat of yesterday. We've got to do it one more time, and it would really be a feather in the cap for those guys to win tomorrow and advance to the playoffs."
