NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware baseball program has announced its team award winners for the 2022 season.
Joseph Carpenter was named Offensive Player of the Year, while JJ Freeman was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year and Mike Biasiello was selected Pitcher of the Year. Dominic Ragazzo earned the Max Orland Rookie of the Year award, while Chris Ludman was given the Perry E. Burkett Award for Perseverance, Dedication and Commitment.
Carpenter, who was named second team All-CAA earlier this week, started all 51 games at first base for the Blue Hens. He led the CAA with 19 doubles, while he ranked second with 112 total bases and tied for third with 63 hits. Carpenter batted .310 on the season, ranking second on the squad with 41 RBI and eight homers. Carpenter also tied for the team lead with 17 multi-hit games, recording four-hit performances against Iona, Monmouth and Saint Peter's.
Freeman also started every game for the Blue Hens, all but one at shortstop, recording a .951 fielding percentage with 77 putouts and 136 assists. An honorable mention All-CAA pick, he batted .270 with 54 hits on the year. Freeman ranked seventh in the CAA with 98 total bases, eighth with a team-high nine homers, and ninth with 40 runs scored and 13 doubles. Freeman belted a walkoff homer vs. Georgetown, and also crushed a solo homer and a grand slam to finish with five RBI during a win over Saint Peter's.
Biasiello was the Blue Hens' top relief pitcher this season, compiling a 2-2 record with a 2.76 ERA. He tied for third in the CAA with six saves on the year and tied for seventh with 62 strikeouts. Biasiello made 20 appearances on the mound, and picked up victories over Iona and Georgetown. He was especially effective down the stretch, allowing just five runs in 23 innings pitched over his final eight outings.
Ragazzo, playing his first year at UD after transferring from West Virginia, started 28 games in centerfield before suffering a season-ending elbow injury vs. Hofstra on Apr. 15. Despite missing the final five weeks of the season, he is still tied for the CAA lead and ranked 21st in the nation with five triples. An honorable mention All-CAA selection, Ragazzo was also fifth in the league with a .322 batting average and tied for fifth with 16 stolen bases. He posted 38 hits, 33 runs scored and 14 RBI on the year.
Ludman was Delaware's ace this season, winning four games while ranking eighth in the league with 69 innings pitched and ninth with 58 strikeouts. He allowed just one unearned run during seven-inning outings against Rider and Towson, and struck out a career-high 14 batters during a win over Saint Peter's. An outstanding student as well, Ludman was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team earlier this month.
