Field Hockey Eyes Deep Season Run; Opens 2022 Campaign with Pair of Home Matches

NEWARK, Del. – Winners of three-straight and eight of the last nine CAA Championships, the Delaware field hockey team is geared up to make another run in the 2022 campaign. The Blue Hens begin the chase this weekend with a pair of home matches as VCU and no. 12 Virginia head to Newark on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Both games will stream nationally on FloLive.

ABOUT THE SQUAD:
- UD is ranked 17th in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Poll.
- The Blue Hens led the CAA with five preseason honorees, including the Preseason Player of the Year in Julia Duffhuis. Joining Duffhuis on the Preseason Team is Ashlyn Carr, Lizzie Gaebel, and Kiki Oudshoorn. Sian Emslie was named a Preseason Honorable Mention.
- In addition, UD was picked first in the league's preseason poll.
- The Blue Hens return eight starters from last season's CAA Championship team, including five All-CAA honorees and the reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Year, Duffhuis.
- Duffhuis is the league's top returning goal scorer after netting 13 a season ago. She also led Delaware with 29 points and earned Second-Team All-America accolades.
- Carr returns after leading the CAA with 11 assists last season. She earned First-Team All-CAA honors, starting all 22 games for the Blue Hens in 2021.
- The roster features eight new faces with the addition of Lainey Baker, Lia Becker, Lisa Kater, Cameron Medinger, Emma Miller, Reese Momorella, Izzy Rothwell, and Noelle Sabbagh.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Delaware is 10-1 in 11 previous meetings with VCU, but the teams haven't faced each other since 2011.
- The Blue Hens post an 8-11-1 record in 20 previous meetings against UVA, with the most recent coming in Virginia in 2021. The Cavaliers won that meeting 3-1.
- The VCU game is the first of nine matches at Rullo Stadium this season. The Blue Hens will also be hosting the 2022 CAA Tournament.
- VCU went 12-6 in 2021, falling to Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
- Virginia went 12-9 last season, dropping the ACC Championship game to North Carolina and falling to Maryland in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
