NEWARK, Del. – No. 17 Delaware field hockey (1-0) cruised to a 2-0 victory over VCU (0-1) Friday evening at Rullo Field. Ella Kaufman and Berber Bakermans each tallied scores, while goalkeeper Lizzie Gaebel notched a shutout with five saves.

"The team was excited to open our season and did so with a solid performance today," head coach Rolf van de Kirkhof said. "It was nice to play 16 players, including a number of freshmen, in our rotation. Today's game is providing us with lots of good moments and growth opportunities as we prepare for Virginia on Sunday."

The first goal of the game didn't come until the second quarter when Kaufman scored off a rebound shot in front of the opposing keeper at 7:24. The score marks the first of the sophomore's career.

With 1:56 remaining in the third stanza, the Blue Hens forced a Rams' turnover in their defensive zone. Morgan Rigual laced a pass through the scoring zone to Bakermans who fired the score in.

Rookies Cameron Medinger and Lia Becker made their first career starts in the match, while Lisa Kater, Reese Momorella, and Noelle Sabbagh all played in their first career game.

A quick turnaround for the Blue & Gold at it hosts no. 12 Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m.
