NEWARK, Del. – Rookie Lia Becker tallied her first career goal in no. 17 Delaware field hockey's 4-1 setback to no. 12 Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
"A game of two halves for the Blue Hens and one that will benefit our development as a team in weeks to come," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said after the game. "As a program, we are looking forward to using our performance and experience from VCU and UVA as we prepare for American and Monmouth on the road next weekend."
UD found the scoreboard first with Becker's score after a dish from Kiki Oudshoorn in the middle of the scoring area.
Virginia answered about three minutes later with a rebound shot from Dani Mendez-Trendler to knot things at the half.
The Cavaliers tallied two quick goals to start the third quarter and added some insurance in the fourth with another score.
"The game had a NCAA tournament feel to it with lots of on field action and excitement and tons of Delaware and Virginia fans in the stands," van de Kerkhof added.
For the second-straight contest, Lizzie Gaebel made five saves.
The Blue Hens return to action on Friday with their first road contest of the season. UD makes the trip to the nation's capital for a battle with American at 1 p.m.
